Your arm has to be straight no matter what.
If your arm stays straight so does the ball.

Well, for someone who has never bowled before..

If you are a teen then don't use a ball heavier than 14-15 pounds.

But if you're in your twenties you COULD use a ball that is 16 pounds, but don't hurt yourself trying to heave a ball that is clearly too heavy for you down the lane.

For a beginner just stand straight, and swing the ball with each step you take. Walk slowly toward the lane, and don't bend your elbow when you swing the ball. Also, don't swing your arm around your back, because then you'll throw the ball out if you can't re-adjust your arm (which probably less than 1% of all beginners know how to do correctly). Also, don't stop and then roll the ball. On the last step you take you should release the ball.

When you release the ball try to roll it onto the lane, don't throw it, and follow through on the swing.

Most importantly: Have fun. You do better when you have a higher confidence and a lighter mood.

My experience is every time I make a gutter ball I celebrate. It makes everybody laugh so hard they forget my score is usually around 40.

My advice: don't be embarassed if you don't do great...My average bowling score for a while was around forty, and although my cousin gave me endless grief about it (that's just how our relationship works) it was still lots of fun, and since your friends are going with you it should be fun.

Maybe use a flash if you just want to take photos of your friends.
If no flash, then select a high shutter speed or use a tripod to reduce blur.

It depends on what you are attempting to shoot. If you are taking photos of the over all feel of the venue, you can go with a slower speed. Try placing the camera on a flat surface if you don't have a tripod, this will help reduce shake.

If you are wanting to shoot the action of bowling, use your flash, and go for a higher speed. You might also try angling your flash up slightly to bounce it off the ceiling so you don't get that harsh flash look to your photos.

Also, something that works well is to set your camera to an automatic mode (say, action mode) take some photos, see what the camera is doing (you should be able to see what the speed and aperture, etc are) and then adjust your settings manually until you are coming up with photos that you like!

Best of luck, and most of all have a fun day!
