Taking photos in a bowling alley – any tips?

I have a Canon SX 10 IS, so a super-zoom point-and-shoot digital camera. Additionally I have a basic external flash I can mount on to the the camera. No problem. It has a diffuser, different levels but is pretty basic.

We’re headed to the bowling alley in about 45 minutes and I was wondering: what are some times to taking some great photos? The lighting in bowling alleys is usually less-than-desired, and I just wanted to make sure that they look great!

It depends on what you are attempting to shoot. If you are taking photos of the over all feel of the venue, you can go with a slower speed. Try placing the camera on a flat surface if you don’t have a tripod, this will help reduce shake.

If you are wanting to shoot the action of bowling, use your flash, and go for a higher speed. You might also try angling your flash up slightly to bounce it off the ceiling so you don’t get that harsh flash look to your photos.

Also, something that works well is to set your camera to an automatic mode (say, action mode) take some photos, see what the camera is doing (you should be able to see what the speed and aperture, etc are) and then adjust your settings manually until you are coming up with photos that you like!

Best of luck, and most of all have a fun day!

Maybe use a flash if you just want to take photos of your friends.
If no flash, then select a high shutter speed or use a tripod to reduce blur.
